What is risk management?
Risk management is an approach to medical practice that will:
- Reduce your overall risk of being named in a malpractice allegation
- Increase your defensibility if a lawsuit occurs
What does the Risk Management Department do?
NORCAL's Risk Management Department has made available numerous programs and services to promote patient safety and help reduce policyholders’ professional liability exposures.
Risk management offers the following:
- Consultation services, including 24/7 telephone advice, on-site assessments and tailored presentations
- Award-winning continuing medical education (CME) courses that address pertinent clinical and administrative topics
- A monthly Claims Rx newsletter that features timely articles about emerging and ongoing medical professional liability risks
The Risk Management Specialists are a team of professionals who have backgrounds in patient care, hospital risk management and educational development. The Specialists conduct practice assessments, provide risk management telephone advice, deliver presentations and conduct research on a variety of medical-legal issues.
What do I do if I have a risk management question?
Contact the Risk Management Department at (800) 652-1051, ext. 2244. You will be connected to the Risk Management Specialist who is assigned to the territory in which you practice. If your Risk Management Specialist is unavailable, you will be given the option to leave a message and he or she will call you back. If your question is urgent, you may press "0" to connect back to the operator who will help you find a live person. The Risk Management Department is available to answer your questions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
How do I get CME credit through NORCAL?
Each year, the Risk Management Department publishes a catalog of CME activities that is mailed to all policyholders. A current list of CME activities is also available on our website. You may register for a CME activity by one of three ways:

How do I qualify for a 5% Risk Management Discount?
Some physicians who practice alone or in groups of 2 to 4 physicians are eligible for a 5% discount on their insurance premium if they participate in a qualifying risk management activity. To find out if you are eligible for the discount, contact Policyholder Services at (877) 443-7232.
